The failure that doesn't show up in reporting
An anti-frizz variant was appearing in search and almost nobody was clicking it. Nothing was suppressed, nothing was broken, the price was competitive and the listing was healthy by every measure a dashboard reports.
This is the hardest failure in the channel to diagnose, because it produces no error. The product is being shown and not chosen, and the only symptom is a number that never arrives. The reflex response is to discount, which fixes the symptom by permanently lowering what the category will pay for you.
What the main image is competing against
On a search results page your main image is roughly two hundred pixels competing against forty other products at the same size. The shopper is not evaluating the product. They are deciding, in well under a second, which of these looks like it belongs at the top of this category.
That decision is made on legibility at thumbnail scale, on whether the format reads instantly, and on whether the product looks like the premium option or the cheap one. It is not made on ingredients, claims or star rating, all of which arrive after the click.
How we measured it
The new main image went live and search click-through on that variant rose 160% across more than 15,000 impressions. Shoppers seeing it in search clicked 2.6 times more often. A sister variant in the same family posted 113%.
The measurement is organic search only, with no ad traffic in the number, comparing identical search windows before and after launch. Median price was flat across both windows, which was verified rather than assumed. Nothing changed except the picture.
The expensive alternative
Across the flagship line the same refresh moved search click-through 64% on more than 54,000 impressions, again with prices unchanged. Traffic tripled and revenue grew 85% inside matched eight-week windows.
A discount deep enough to move click-through that far would have reset the reference price for the category permanently, and your retail buyers would be negotiating against it next year. The main image is the cheapest lever in the catalogue and discounting is the most expensive one.
