Why discounting repositions the brand
Most brands approaching Amazon.ca think about discounting first. Coupons, deals, a launch price to buy velocity. Pricing is treated as a lever you pull after the listing is live.
That's the wrong order. A discount is a temporary price, but the market reads the permanent one. When deals recur or MAP goes unenforced, the brand is repositioned as one that competes on price, not quality: online, and in store. The category's memory is longer than the deal window.
The category ceiling
Category shoppers accept a price ceiling anchored to the product noun in the title. A shampoo has one ceiling; a hair treatment has another. The ceiling is set by what the product is called and how the format is framed: not by the promotion calendar.
Our portfolio's average selling price is up 41.4% year over year while units grew 30%. The balance came from catalogue architecture and premium-tier introduction: selling better, not merely selling more.
The product noun in the title
The title is the price anchor. Naming a SKU as a treatment, a system, or a professional tier changes the ceiling before any promotion runs: the shopper's expectation of what the product costs is set at the search page, in the first line of the listing.
This is why listing copy is written for the algorithm and the shopper in that order of appearance: the noun decides who the listing competes with, and the price ceiling decides what it can earn.
Formats set the ceiling, not promotions
Which sizes and price points you launch is a pricing decision made at catalogue time. Premium-tier introduction is how a portfolio raises average selling price while units keep growing: new formats carry the margin, promotions defend the existing ones.
The alternative: promotions pull the ceiling down. A recurring deal teaches the shopper the deal price, and the deal price becomes the reference price.
A worked example
Our creative program tripled traffic on a flagship line with prices unchanged: every click-through claim was verified against pricing, and the median price was flat across both comparison windows. Traffic and conversion did the work.
Discounting is the expensive way to buy what content and architecture earn. The price ceiling is set once, at the title; everything after that defends it.
