Why Q1 gets abandoned
The holiday quarter takes the budget, the attention and the inventory. What follows is a trough that most brands treat as a season to survive rather than a season to operate in. Budgets are cut in January because December was expensive, and the account goes quiet exactly when it is cheapest to be loud.
The trough is real. Demand does fall. What is not real is the assumption that your share of it has to fall at the same rate.
What the instruments show
We map demand by search term and by time, which is how you see that a category's peak is not one season but a set of narrow windows, and that the windows move by region. Peak advertising hours in one province are dead hours in another.
The same mapping shows what happens when competitors pull budget. Fewer bidders in the auction means the same impression share costs less to hold, so a January dollar buys visibility a December dollar could not.
Landing creative before the trough
A flagship hair treatment SKU tripled its traffic comparing the November to December holiday baseline against the January to February trough. Traffic went up while the category went down.
The creative landed ahead of the window rather than during it. New main image, full image stack, A+ on the parent. Search click-through compounds into rank, rank compounds into impressions, and none of that happens on the timeline of a campaign you switch on in January.
The arithmetic of a thin month
Rank earned in a thin month is rank you carry into a heavy one. The listings that hold visibility through Q1 enter the next peak already positioned, against competitors restarting from a standstill.
Going dark is a decision with a cost that shows up two quarters later, in a place nobody thinks to look for it. If your account gets quiet in January, that is worth pricing before next January.
