The $0.06 click: most accounts aren't bidding too little

An established personal care line, automatic targeting, and disciplined negation. Matching the product to the query is what collapsed the cost of acquisition.

Click-to-order at $0.06 a click, on automatic targeting with disciplined negation.

The reflex to raise bids

When an account underperforms, the first diagnosis is almost always that the bids are too low. So more money goes into the same keywords, which is how an account becomes expensive without becoming better.

The real problem is usually intent. You are paying for clicks from queries your product does not actually answer, and no bid level corrects a mismatch. A higher bid on the wrong query buys more of the wrong traffic.

What negation actually does

Structured automatic targeting exists to surface the queries you would never have guessed at. Close match, loose match, substitutes and complements each return a different shape of demand, and most of what comes back is wrong.

The value is in the pruning. Weekly search-term harvesting, then aggressive negation of everything that clicked and did not convert. What survives is the set of queries where your product is the obvious answer, and those are the ones worth isolating into their own campaigns.

When the product is the answer

On an established personal care line in a high-intent, repeat-purchase category, that discipline produced 17.4% click-to-order at $0.06 a click. Roughly one in six clicks became an order.

The category matters here. Repeat-purchase consumables generate queries where the shopper already knows what they want and is looking for it specifically. When the product genuinely answers the query, acquisition cost collapses, because you are no longer paying to persuade anyone.

The maximum you can pay

Every campaign we run has a calculated ceiling, derived from gross margin and observed conversion rate. It is the most a click can cost before the unit stops paying for itself, and it is a number, not a judgement.

Most accounts have never calculated theirs. Across 50 campaigns our blended return is 4.62× at 21.6% ACoS, and structured automatic discovery runs at 16.5% across 46 of them. Those numbers are not the product of clever bidding. They are the product of refusing to buy clicks that cannot pay.
