Two thirds of a Buy Box: winning top-of-search on a listing you're still fighting for

A non-exclusive line with grey-market sellers on its own listings, holding 10.97% top-of-search impression share anyway. What the playbook looks like without exclusivity.

NON-EXCLUSIVE · HERO SKU

66.3%

Buy Box held while competing against grey-market sellers on its own listings.

What you're actually competing with

A volume haircare line launched into Canada on non-exclusive terms. Anyone holding stock could list against it, and several did. The brand was competing for the Buy Box on listings carrying its own name.

Exclusivity is the fastest route out of that and it is not always available. An exclusive line in the same portfolio, run by the same team in the same period, held 86.3% of its Buy Box. This one had to be operated differently.

Spend follows ownership

The rule that governs everything else is that advertising a listing you do not control funds a competitor's conversion. Ownership is checked before spend, not reported after it.

On a contested listing that means spend tracks the hours and the SKUs where ownership is actually held, rather than running flat across a catalogue where the box changes hands through the day. Monitoring stops being a reporting function and becomes a targeting input.

The hero SKU isolation

Inside the family, one child was carrying the volume. We isolated it into a dedicated manual campaign with its own bids, budget and negatives, then applied top-of-search modifiers to hold position where category intent concentrates.

That campaign runs 29.4% ACoS at 10.97% top-of-search impression share with 8.8% click-to-order, against 22.1% ACoS across all 18 campaigns on the brand. The hero SKU holds 66.3% of its Buy Box while doing it.

The rights application in parallel

Defence and monitoring hold the position. They do not change the structure, and structure is what determines how hard the position is to hold. So the rights work runs at the same time, not after.

Exclusive distribution paired with a registered Canadian trademark converts an ongoing enforcement problem into a structural one, because grey-market sellers lose the inventory path rather than losing an argument. Until that lands, two thirds of a Buy Box and the top of the search page is a position worth operating from.
