What Sponsored Brands command
Headline and video units buy the top of the results page: the most visible real estate in the category. They command a premium cost per click for it.
The premium is worth paying when the unit converts the visibility into revenue at a price that clears the listing's unit economics. The condition is rarely met on day one of an account.
Unit economics before bids
Every campaign is managed to a calculated maximum cost per click, derived from gross margin and observed conversion rate. A click that cannot pay for itself is not bought, regardless of how good the keyword looks.
Sponsored Brands is where that discipline gets tested hardest: the clicks cost more, so the listing must convert better before the unit pays for itself.
When they sink the account
Run prematurely, Sponsored Brands is the fastest way to destroy an account's profitability: the premium CPC eats the margin of a listing that wasn't converting yet, and the budget that should have been building discovery is gone.
The account structure comes first: automatic discovery, manual isolation, placement modifiers. Sponsored Brands is a later stage, earned by the numbers, not by the calendar.
